Description:
The Panorama "Defence of Sevastopol 1854-1855" is the well-known work of battle art and the monument to the heroic defenders of Sevastopol in the Crimean (Eastern) War 1853-1856. The author of the panorama is Franz Alekseevich Roubaud (1856-1928).
On May 14 (27), 1905 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the heroic defence, the panorama was opened. On June 25,1942, during the bombardment some bombs hit the building and it caught on fire. Thanks to the rescue works, 86 parts of canvas were saved.

After World War II the question about the restoration of the panoramic painting was arisen. Under the direction of academicians V. Yakovlev (1893-1953), and after his death by P. Sokolov-Skalya (1899-1961), 17 Moscow painters recreated the panorama for 3 years as F. Roubaud did. At the same time builders reconstructed the ruined panorama building.

The panorama tells about one of the 349 days of the Sevastopol defence - on June 6 (18), 1855, when the defenders repelled the assault of the fortifications of the Korabelnaya Quarter.
